Using zines as a healing tool:
This workshop aims to empower students in specific programs, such as science, to explore the use of zines as a pedagogical tool, and gives priority to the perspectives of adolescents. Moreover, we can use it as a healing tool to work for non-profit organizations and groups of adolescents and children who have suffered the trauma of abuse, neglect or lack of a home. This access to an artistic program makes a transformation towards resilience more accessible.
Zine, which stands for magazine, are booklets of different formats and length, which emphasize DIY and deal with all kinds of topics through images and text. Their creation helps in the use of language, social skills, decision making and the development of research and writing skills.
When using zines as a therapeutic tool, keep in mind that these teens and children need the opportunity to regulate strong emotions, interact with caring people, and use their resources to take the next steps. Zine workshops offer a unique and powerful space to regulate and connect, in an environment where they can simply be them.
